Frantisek Kupka, 1871-1957, is Czech by origin and Parisian by adoption.

If Kandinsky executed the first abstract watercolor in 1910, it was nevertheless Kupka who confronted the public by presenting at the Paris autumn fair in 1912 the first paintings designed without reference to the outside world. The painter will undertake soon after to explain himself in this book written in French, The Creation in the Plastic Arts.

Kupka’s aesthetic develops according to the original paths, irreducible to the recent vogue of Viennese or Russian art, and very distinct from those of other great theorists of his time such as Kandinsky, Malevitch or Mondrian

Apart from a few fragments published in the 1920s, Creation in the Plastic Arts was known only in Czech Republic. It is revealed here for the first time in its entirety, a dense and complex document, now essential for a good understanding of the artistic evolution of this century.
